Name: Joe Gennaro
Favorite thing written: Probably a sketch called “The Bunker Dating Game” that The Nerdologues did as part of our Skywalking Dead show. It was about a father trying to host a dating game show for his daughter in a post-apocalyptic bunker, and the only three bachelors he could find were a young child, an old man, and a road warrior with a very limited vocabulary.
Favorite comedy TV shows/movies: Seinfeld was my favorite show growing up – that and The Simpsons. I feel very drawn to Seinfeld – I think Jerry as a comedian is hilarious, and the writing in that show I consider genius.
My favorite movie as a kid was Ghostbusters; it had been many years since I watched that until recently, and it still made me laugh out loud again. The fun those guys had doing that was very apparent and inspiring.
Favorite specific jokes/bits (The Max Temkin Honorary Question): Callbacks are the funniest thing in the world. One of my favorite things to do when I’m doing improv is to take something somebody has said or done earlier and bring it back in, even if it’s very subtle. I think showing that you’re paying attention and that you’re appreciating what was done before you, even in the written realm – honoring the rules that have been established and bringing them back – is very enjoyable.
Advice for writers: Write what you like. People will come and see that. Instead of trying to overreach – which can be a challenge in itself, and I’m not saying don’t do that – I think using your own knowledge and experiences as a base is the way to go.
(note: Joe’s not in this sketch, but he wrote it)
